The first digit of the code in the shells of the eggs corresponds to the mode of creation of the hens. You can find-if one of the following four digits:

  • Code “3” – a System of conventional cages: this type of eggs is most common to find and cheaper. The chickens that originate this type of eggs are then reared in cages, in conditions of space, light, food, hygiene and temperature are defined legally, in the sense of securing the basic conditions of well-being of the animal, without ever forgetting the maximum productivity.
  • Code “2” – Production in the soil: in this case, the chickens are reared in confined spaces, such as long houses or pavilions, where the density of chickens is about 10 per square meter, with the mangers and drinking troughs separated. Since in these two cases there is a high number of chickens close to each other, the beak of these animals is usually cut, in order to avoid situations of attack between chickens or self-mutilation, because they can experience a changed behavior before situations of stress.
  • Code “1” – Production outdoor: the chickens reared outdoors overnight or shelter-in locations identical to those referred to in the code “2”; however there is also an outdoor space with access to practically continuous, and the density of chickens 4 per square meter.
  • Code “0” – organic Production: in situations of organic production, the chickens are under the same physical conditions of the code “1”. However, the feed provided to the hens is different, coming mostly from organic agriculture.

Then the first digit of the code in the shell of the eggs, come two letters, that correspond to the code of the member state. For example, in the case of eggs produced in Portugal, you will find the letters EN.

Then the first digit and two letters, will arise a more a digit, which indicates the Regional Direction of Agriculture and Fisheries, which oversees the exploration of where the eggs are originating, according to the geographical area.


Finally, after the digit relative to the Regional Direction of Agriculture and Fisheries, the code of the holding, consisting of three digits separated by a hyphen from the previous digit.


In addition to this code, composed by the four areas already referred to, the expiration date should also be included in the shell of the egg. The location where the appears may vary, but will not find it included in the code explained.
